About ICO Files and Favicons

The ICO format is used for website favicons (the small icon that appears in browser tabs and bookmarks) and for Windows application icons. A single ICO file can embed multiple image sizes so the operating system or browser can choose the most appropriate resolution for the display context.

Modern browsers also accept PNG and SVG files as favicons via the <link rel="icon"> tag. However, ICO remains the most compatible format, particularly for older browsers and when serving a favicon at the root domain (/favicon.ico) without a link tag.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will the PNG to ICO converter be available?

This tool is currently in development and will be released soon. The finished tool will convert PNG images to ICO format entirely in your browser using the Canvas API.

What is an ICO file?

ICO is the Windows icon file format. It can contain multiple images at different sizes (typically 16x16, 32x32, 48x48, and 256x256) within a single file. It is primarily used for website favicons and Windows application icons.

What size should my favicon PNG be?

For best results, start with a square PNG of at least 256x256 pixels. The converter will generate the standard icon sizes from this source image.

Can I create a favicon from a logo?

Yes. Upload your logo PNG and the converter will resize it to favicon dimensions. For best results, your logo should be square and readable at small sizes — very detailed logos often do not work well as favicons.
